The house

Thirty steps of sand between the deck and the Atlantic.

Blue Ocean Beach House stands behind the low dune on the long beach at Kommetjie, part of the Klein Slangkop Security Estate — watched over, but without walls or barbed wire. The ocean is in front of you. The mountains are behind you. Between the two, there is very little else.

Four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. A pool and a separate heated pool on the deck. A courtyard garden that fills with birds in the morning. The house was designed and built by the family who own it and finished in 2019, and it has been lived in every year since.

The architecture

Designed with architect Stephen Lennard and his wife Sue over several years, and built low against the dune so the house sits under the horizon rather than on top of it.

The bedrooms

The master suite upstairs looks over the water. The three downstairs bedrooms open into the courtyard, each with its own shower room.

The deck

Cape Town can be windy. The deck almost never is. Louvred shading, comfortable furniture, a gas braai and the whole of the Atlantic in front of it.

Four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and everything a family needs to stop thinking about logistics for two weeks.

The owners

We found it on Google Earth.

We are a family from Germany, and we spent our first holiday in Kommetjie in 2012. We had been looking for a great beach in southern Africa, and we found this one from above, on Google Earth. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we have ever made.

In 2015 a plot came up for sale. After years of planning and designing with the architect Stephen Lennard and his wife Sue, the house was finished in 2019.

We come back every year. The rest of the time we are glad to hand the keys to people who will enjoy this place the way we do.

Kommetjie

Kommetjie is a relaxed surfing village on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula — good people, good waves, and a great deal of nature in every direction.

You drive over the mountain from the airport, and from the top you can already see the ocean and the long stretch of Noordhoek beach below. Fifty minutes from Cape Town International, and a world away from it.

Long Beach
Nine kilometres of sand running north towards Noordhoek, reached from the house without crossing a road.
Mountain and fynbos
The peninsula mountains rise behind the village, with walking straight from the estate.
